As one of the largest postal agencies worldwide, the U.S. Postal Service delivers more than 700 million letters, packages, magazines and other mailings every day – more than 200 billion pieces of mail per year. Sorting mail by size and type, destination and priority is an incomprehensibly huge and complicated task. Yet the job gets done, almost flawlessly, every day. In other words, it’s a perfect fit for the precision, reliability and long life of Kollmorgen motion solutions.

A Few Milliseconds to Get It Right

Nothing is more critical to dependable mail delivery than the sorting machines. With letters coming down the line literally at highway speeds, hundreds of sensors and axes are employed to read postal codes and divert letters into the right area. Actuators and servo motors need to perform with extreme speed and precision to correctly handle each letter within milliseconds of passing a registration point.

Hundreds of Axes, One Standard of Reliability

A typical sorting machine may have as many as 300 axes or more to deal with all the different postal codes. To keep the machines within a manageable footprint, motion components must be extremely compact. And to avoid repair and maintenance issues that could hold up delivery, they must be extremely reliable in nearly continuous operation at very high duty cycles.

Kollmorgen Delivers

Kollmorgen co-engineering delivers servo motors and drives with the exact specifications that OEMs demand to provide the speed, precision and longevity required for these high-performance machines while fitting the compact installation footprint. We have the ability to modify standard motors to suit exact specifications, without the costs, risks, production delays and supply shortages that plague custom-built motors. And Kollmorgen co-engineering provides the expertise and tools needed to create perfectly synchronized motion at the highest throughput speeds. Like the postal service itself, Kollmorgen always delivers.
